【STORY】

特に期待せずに機内で先行上映を観ました。
（日本ではDVDのみ？）

単なるラブコメではなく、それぞれの人生に
けっこうな問題を抱えている人々が、
どうそれを笑いながらなんとか切り抜けていくか、
の中に恋愛があり。
というライフドラマでした。

ジャック・ニコルソンはチョイとではなく、
がっつり出ています。
若手は中堅どころですがみんなすごく演技派で、
名前を知らない人ばかりでもとても安定感あり見れます。

吹き替え版は大抵の場合、意味不明のノリで
ガッカリですが、今回は日本語訳が非常にリアリティあり、
もしかしたら吹き替え版のほうが面白いかも。

レンタルではなく、保存して置きたくなる作品なので
☆５つ。

病院のシーンがすごく良かったです
オーウェン・ウィルソンは無邪気なキャラを演じることが多い印象ですね、今作でもそんな感じでした
ストーリーも自分が好きなハッピーエンドで見て満足でした

見終わった感想は、
ジョージとジョージパパがやり取りする場面が多すぎて、この映画にこのやり取りが頻繁に
必要なのかな・・と思いました。

２度見ましたが、パパ＆ジョージのやり取りは早送り。

最後の相手を決める時、もう少し時間をかけてほしかったかなー。

全編観てしまいました。何と言っても、ヒロインがどの瞬間を切り取っても全く魅力が感じられない。こんなことって珍しいくらいじゃないでしょうか？むしろ、赤ちゃんを産んだ大柄な脇役女性のほうが遥かに惹かれるものがありました。あの病院でのシーンがこの作品全体を通じて唯一僅かながらに救いが感じられましたが、それにしても、あの場面でビデオカメラが回っていなかったというようなくだりとか、その似たようなパターンで全編に渡って散りばめられているあのドジ役男優の一連のドタバタは、本当にひとつとして笑えもしなければストーリーに掛かっているわけでもないし、大して何の効果もないし、観ていてイライラするだけでした。そして最も怒りがこみ上げてきた元凶は主演女優が随所で繰り広げる会話。「イエス」「ノー」と真反対のリアクションを繰り返して、揺れ動く心を描写しているつもりなのかもしれませんが（作り手側としてはそうであるとしか捉えようがないので間違いないはずです）、脚本としても実に粗雑ですし、演技も心底下手ですし、なんでこんな無駄なやり取りを毎度毎度繰り広げるのか理解できません。いわゆる月9ドラマのようで、いちいち喧嘩しては感情が高ぶって展開に拍車が付くとでも思っているのでしょう。加えて主演女優の表情もそういった出来の悪い低俗なラブコメにちょうど寄り添った具合で、浅はか過ぎて呆れ返るほどでした。

原題「HOW DO YOU KNOW」なんでわかるの？

オリンピックで金メダルを取った全米ソフトボールチーム。キャプテンのリサは新監督から31歳で足も遅くなったとメンバーから外されてしまいます。ソフトボールが全てでした。
悩むリサに「一緒に暮らさないか？」と恋人のマティは言います。

会社ぐるみの投資詐欺が疑われているジョージと父親。ジョージは起訴される恐れが。
裁判が終わるまで別れようと恋人のテリーに言われます。
秘書のアニーから「気が紛れるから他の女性に電話を」と勧められます。

ジョージは知人から教えられたリサの番号に電話し夕食に誘います。
ドン底の２人は初対面でマジ切れします。
食事の間は無言でしたが「必要な時間だった」と別れ際には好印象を持ちます。

150キロの豪速球と1400万ドルの年俸のマティと失業中で貯金も少ないジョージ。

リサの人生と恋の行方は…？

リサの誕生日にマティはゴージャスな時計をジョージは紙袋に入った粘土をプレゼントします。

ジョージの秘書のアニーが一番幸せそうでした。
シングル・ママのアニーに父親は「母子ともに健康なんだ。それが一番じゃないか。パパは幸せ者だ」と言います。
アニーの恋人は40歳で失業中です。

「相手を好きなら全力で相手から尽くすもの」
原題のように心をわかってくれる人が一番ということですね。

…でも難しい選択ではありますね。
金銭的な豊かさか？愛情か？
女性の中にはマティを選ぶ人も多いでしょう。
でも今はよくても未来はわからないですね。

「自分に正直であれば得るものもある」
「失意の時に大きな決断は危険」
「自らの心に正直になる方法を学べ」
など名言も多数あります。

I decided to take a chance on this movie despite the fact that the majority of amazon reviews were negative, because being a fan of each of the four main actors, I'd have been surprised if any of them were in a really bad movie. Also, I had seen that there were actually some good reviews on amazon, and having seen the film, I find that I agree with these. Perhaps marketing How Do You Know as a rom-com is to blame for the negative reactions, since this is a difficult movie to categorise- it's too unconventional and, dare I say it, throught-provoking, to be a rom-com in the traditional sense. The pace is not rushed, the romance isn't cloying, sentimental or contrived, the characters are flawed and at no point does it descend into hilarity, cliche or melodrama in the way so many rom-coms do. Yet there is something genuine, endearing and refreshingly different about this movie.

Reese Witherspoon's character, Lisa, is an independent and upbeat professional softball player, who at 31, despite being passionate about the game, is past her best and aboout to be ruthlessly shelved from her team. She admits early on in the film that she has never longed for marriage and motherhood, the natural progression for retired female athletes, and that she doesn't know if she's cut out for either. She dates Matty (Owen Wilson), a rich and succesful baseball player. Matty is good-humoured but emotionally immature, promiscuous and capricious. He struggles in the confines of a serious relationship, much to Lisa's frustration and disappointment. George, played by Paul Rudd, is a charming, old fashioned and considerate chap but he's also somewhat lonely and his sense of decency renders him vulnerable to being taken advantage of. His best friend is his devoted personal secretary and he has an unfulfilling relationship with a self-centred girl who is only really interested in furthering her career. George is also unwittingly about to be stabbed in the back, since the company he manages alongside his father as director (Jack Nicholson) is being investigated for fraud. By his father's design, George is the sacrificial lamb, something he accepts in spite of his innocence because, as he says himself, he ought to have known if dodgy dealings were afoot. So, Lisa and George meet as their misfortunes are unfolding, and an unlikely friendship ensues from a miserable first date. The presence of each in the other's life forces them to consider what is really important to them: the value of friendship, honesty and integrity. The beauty of this movie is that the message it conveys isn't overt or over-sentimentalised. It's a low key masterclass in how to convey so much with just a few words. For instance, Matty's big speech to win Lisa back is merely ''I went crazy when you left; I broke a lamp!' When she takes this as the pre-cursor to the speech, and expects him to continue with something more meaningful, he admits that this was all he'd managed. This epitomises in twenty seconds the frustrated hopes that Lisa had for their relationship.

The characters are actually quite three dimensional and very sympathetically portrayed, the humour is never overdone but there are som laugh-out-loud moments. I thought the cast were all excellent- Reese Witherspoon is dependably appealing and plausible, Owen Wilson is in familiar territory being silly, feckless and rather endearing with it. Jack Nicholson, I thought, was actually perfect as the beligerant, shifty and guilt-ridden father, whose conscience eventually emerges as the film progresses. I've yet to see a film where Paul Rudd disappoints, he is always captivating and witty, and what I particularly like about him is that he never plays overtly macho or sexy characters- he stays true to his strength as an actor, which is playing funny but genuine guys. You can probably tell that I have a little bit of a thing for Paul Rudd.... The script was really sharp and well-written, and the dialogue thoughtful, natural and insightful throughout. This is a 'wise' movie, if you know what I mean. Yes, the pace is more of a gentle canter than a gallop, and it could have been slightly shorter, but it was no Lost in Translation in terms of pace and action. I found it a delight to watch and a much deeper and more dynamic film than many of the negative reviews on here suggest. I can only assume that it was targeted at the wrong audience, and perhaps those viewers felt cheated that the characters didn't profess their undying love in a hot air balloon or in some other utterly contrived and cringesome way. It's clearly a 'marmite' film- but if you're unsure, rent it. I'm glad I did.

A CHARMING, COMPLEX ROMANTIC COMEDY WITH OUTSTANDING WRITING AND A SUPERB CAST WHO DO IT JUSTICE!!

"How Do You Know" is a delightful romantic-comedy!!! (It's nice to learn they're still being made!) It bears a very slight resemblance to "Sweet Home Alabama" in that there does end up being a love triangle & that's where the similarity ends, because these characters are much more 3-dimensional, with some difficult situations they are caught in the midst of upon meeting and forming relationships. And, "love triangle" sounds more simplistic than the film actually is. (I'm giving a very general "overview" review, since I don't want to give any of this wonderful movie away. You can always watch the trailer at rotten tomatoes website. That's how I happened upon it.)

Excellent writing by James L. Brooks, casting is superb, with Reese Witherspoon at the fore, playing Lisa, Paul Rudd as George (how can anyone be that handsome?!) & Owen Wilson is Matty (the only 1 of the 3 who isn't in the midst of a personal crisis & is unabashedly self-involved!) Owen plays this character wonderfully! The entire cast play their characters with lots of humor overlying any pathos, so the movie has a number of "laugh-out-loud" moments. The entire supporting cast give outstanding performances as well, including Jack Nicholson.

It was enjoyable to find that Hollywood casting agents went with talented actors other than Leslie Mann, Jason Bateman & Jennifer Aniston, who seem to be cornering these roles, of late. I enjoy them too, but it's nice to see other actors in a romantic comedy who are equally capable & adept. While Owen Wilson & Paul Rudd are both leading mean in this film, watching Paul Rudd, who is so handsome & has such great comedic timing, I'm reminded of far, far earlier romantic-comedies starring Doris Day with either Rock Hudson, Cary Grant, or James Garner. When the side-kick wasn't Tony Randall, it was a very handsome actor, Gig Young, who also had the comedy down pat, too. Paul Rudd nails this!!

I highly recommend "How Do You Know" for anyone who enjoys a good romantic-comedy, especially with completely "fleshed out" characters...characters who are imperfect and working to come to terms with each of their own personal issues & setbacks, while learning just what it takes to make a sustaining relationship...friendship, understanding, empathy, emotional depth & maturity, love & being able to see the humor & laugh at yourself! Excellent Movie & Performances!!
