When Highlander was released in cinemas in 1986, the film suffered a massive attack from critics. Insults and demeaning remarks; in complete opposite to the public’s support for that story.
Indeed, the film, right from its release, got a massive support from viewers and fans of heroic-sword-fight -fantasy adventures. Spectators mentioning quotes from the film, recounting moments to others. Word-of-mouth that has made Highlander a staple of 1980s classic. Of Scottish drama where a Macleod clan member, Connor, discovers he is an immortal after an enemy clan lord named Kurgan, another immortal, slays him. Due to his new powers, Connor’s community outcasts him as a hellspawn, forcing him to become a hermit, then the pupil of another immortal named Ramirez who trains him for his upcoming new life as a Timeless Warrior. Life of duels with others like him until only one will remain. The winner of the Gathering. A prize that can revolutionise this Earth’s Future for good, if in the hands of people like Connor, or destroy if people like Kurgan obtain it.
So Connor is plunged into a war that spans centuries. Right till 1985. When he and Kurgan’s final confrontation occurs. And in between them, a Forensic analyst named Brenda Wyatt; who has stumbled on the Highlander and his existence. Fallen in love with this man who has endured much loneliness due to his powers.
In sum, a great love story that again shows how landscapes like Scotland are haven for romantic treasures such as Outlander, Highlander, and Breaking the Waves. All three classics that people of the regions have loved and praised as great classics of their folklore. Even showing these films in schools to show the importance of Scottish culture and its perception worldwide.
And although I know there have been sequels surrounding Highlander, even tv shows that show alternate universes to the Macleod story such an animated series that I have loved and which was my entry into the Highlander culture. and a great TV show starring Adrian Paul whom I have met at Montreal Comiccon and who is very kind with fans, I consider this film the definite storyline. Complete in itself and irrefutable in its conclusion which i shall not reveal.
But in a way, these sequels and those TV shows are all proofs that the film, unlike what the critics wrote, is a superb classic of action-fantasy cinema.
And what a classic it is.
From its excellent direction from Russell Mulcahy whom I first saw his work on Tales from Teh Crypt and its masterpiece episode Split Second which he directed. Showing, like he did in that episode, long takes that follow a person’s movements either in a small or large space area. Without the slightest cuts. Innate talent for filming actions scenes. Especially as he filmed Sean Connery’s scenes in one week due to the actor’s time schedule. Which shows how reliable this work load would be perfect for a TV landscape. Which he has shown as well in TV shows like Teen Wolf.
As for the actors, much praises to Christophe Lambert, who was perfect as the Highlander Connor Macleod, and also to Clancy Brown, who did the frightening and powerful Kurgan. Which makes me laugh considering that most kids nowadays know him as Mr Krabs in the SpongeBob Universe. A series that is incomplete opposite to his antagonistic role of Highlander. Where, although I haven’t seen much episodes, I do hope they made references to Highlander as it would have been a great tribute to his pop culture popularity thanks to that Kurgan character.
Kudos also to Sean Connery as the charming and roguish Ramirez, but also to Roxanne Hart who filmed her scenes as the sharp and intuitive Brenda Wyatt, and also to Beatie Edney (Connor’s first wife) and Sheila Gish, who played his adopted daughter he rescued during World War 2.
As for the script, I have nothing but praises for its tackle of the harrowing past of Connor’s life in Scotland, and his existence in Modern New York. But if there would be one remark to say, it would be the regret that the story wasn’t done instead as mini series of three/four one hour episodes. Indeed, I feel that we could have discovered more detail about the Highlander and his travels worldwide, but also his psychological journey through the ages. His joys and pains, but also the reality of living in a modern world that has evolved for better and for worse. Especially in a city like New York that had back then, much more criminality and pollution than before.
Again, what I just wrote is not really a criticism. but more of a feeling how this story could have been even more fascinating as a TV series. Which makes sense as so many successful series like Game of Thrones and Outlander have allowed a more exhaustive dive into their storylines.
But if I do have to state one thing, it is how the HD transfer was very good. Not perfect as there have been some unsuccessful transfers for scenes involving special effects and even a shot set in 16th century Scotland that become grainier as the camera followed Connor, his first wife, and Ramirez. Again this situation happened only in a couple of instances. But which I find worth pointing out , in the hope they shall improve their work for any future remastering.
In conclusion, I encourage everyone who loves Fantasy-Sword stories to watch Highlander. Especially fans of the music group Queen who worked on this project as they composed several songs destined for this film and their album A Kind of Magic. For instance One Year of Love. Which is my favourite song out of all their compositions in this Scotland adventure. Songs composed alongside Michael Kamen’s music. A composer known for his work on Lethal Weapon, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and many other classics.
In sum, Highlander is a masterpiece of 1980s fantasy that can be watched on its own. As the central and most irrefutable conclusion to the storyline of the Macleod Clan.

Veniamo quindi all'edizione Blu-ray.
